2024 permit requirements & dates for top 12 USA National Parks.
Stay up to date with key dates in 2024 to secure hiking and backcountry permits for the most visited National Parks in the USA.
If you have kicked off 2024 with a plan to hike and camp overnight in some of the most popular National Parks in the USA, don’t miss out by securing the necessary permits.
In most instances, permits are available online via Recreation.gov.
What permits do I need?
That all depends on which National Park you are visiting. There are a few different permit types, as not all National Parks operate in the same way.
Permit types can include hiking permits for selected day hikes. Backcountry/wilderness permits for overnight hikes. Car reservations for your visit.
Day hiking vs. backcountry overnight camping.
When it comes to permits for day vs. overnight camping, it’s like night and day! Day hiking is relatively straightforward and in most instances, you don’t need a permit as only a handful of popular day hikes require a permit. This includes Half Dome (when the cables are up) and Angels Landing.
Backcountry camping, aka hiking popular trails such as the John Muir Trail (JMT) or Grand Canyon Rim to Rim trail, can be a LOT more difficult.
Due to high demand and strict limits on numbers, Backcountry/Wilderness Permits (that allow you to camp overnight in the backcountry), are extremely popular and can be tough to get your hands on.
Best bet? Apply for permits as soon as they become available and have a backup plan in the event you are unsuccessful. I know. No-one wants a Plan B!
