Do you have any side trips planned before or after your cycling trip?
How attached are you to your own bike?!
Here are a few considerations to help you decide which is the best approach for you.
Fly with your bike.
If you own a touring bike, this may be the preferred option. You will need to research the baggage policy of your airline and pack the bike for flying in the guidelines provided.
You may need to pay extra and notify the airline in advance that you are travelling with a bike (so they can ensure there is space).
Hire a touring bike stateside.
Hiring a touring bike is a great option if you are planning other activities before or after your cycling trip. This way, you have the luxury of finishing your cycling trip and be free of your bike.
If you don’t own a touring bike, this is a great way to enjoy the ride on a bike that is built for long distance cycling.
Buy a touring bike stateside.
If you are cycling for a long period and don’t own a touring bike, you could purchase a touring bike when you get to the USA.
This way, you can fly to the USA hassle free and arrange to collect the bike in the town where you are starting your adventure.
If you are planning other activities or side trips, you could do that before you collect the bike.
